What’s the Base Bridge Mistake That Costs You?

The ETH arrived on Base, but the wallet still showed the old network. I clicked around, switched networks twice, and nearly sent the next transaction from the wrong chain.

That is the easy mistake with a Base bridge: treating the transfer as finished when only the asset has moved. The receiving network, wallet display, and app you plan to use all need to line up.

A bridge transfer has two separate jobs. First, it moves funds from Ethereum or another supported network to Base. Second, it leaves you with spendable funds on Base. The first can succeed while the second still looks broken.

Check the destination before you confirm

Before sending, select Base as the destination network and check the asset you are moving. ETH is the simplest case. Tokens can be less forgiving. A token may arrive under a different display name, use a different contract, or not appear in the wallet until you add it manually.

Keep a little ETH on Base for gas. Do not bridge your entire balance. If you move 0.01 ETH, leaving zero behind for the next transaction defeats the point of the transfer. A small test amount is usually worth the extra confirmation.

When the transaction is pending, do not submit it again just because the bridge page has not refreshed. Open the transaction record in your wallet or block explorer and check its status. A second attempt can create confusion, especially if the first transfer later completes.

The practical sequence is short: connect the right wallet, choose the source network, choose Base, verify the asset and amount, leave gas on the destination, then wait for finality. Afterward, switch the wallet to Base and confirm the balance there. If the balance is missing, check the token’s visibility before assuming the funds are gone.

For the full workflow, keep this base bridge reference open while you make the transfer. The useful habit is not memorizing every button. It is checking the destination balance before moving on.

One final safeguard

Use the same wallet address on both sides unless you deliberately intend to send elsewhere. Confirm the first and last characters of the address, review the network one more time, and save the transaction hash. That thirty-second pause prevents the mistake that turns a routine bridge into a recovery problem.
